FREQUENT VISITORS

...and the small solitary mammals

The red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), Iberian mole (Talpa occidentalis) and European hedgehog (Erinaceus europeus) are other small animals also documented at Lagar Velho. Their presence at the site, although reduced, contributes to our knowledge of the great animal biodiversity that once existed in the Lapedo Valley, during these ancient times of our History. These animals are still common today in various habitats around the world, including Portugal, and their conservation status is not too alarming.
Their ecology is in line with the presence of forested areas, water and well-developed soils in the surrounding area. However, given the rarity of the documented remains, it is harder to assess whether these small mammals were used by the groups as food or for other everyday requirements.
