Materials are recovered by means of archaeological excavation, using methods, equipment and instruments sometimes quite sophisticated.
The excavation process is very slow and inherently destructive, because it changes the anthropogenic deposits and interferes with their preservation conditions. Should the most adequate and up-to-date methodologies and procedures not be applied, and a thorough record of all the materials recovered, as well as any occurrences that arise during this process, not be kept, our knowledge of the past could be compromised forever. This is why archaeological excavations can only be conducted by professional archaeologists duly authorised by Cultural Heritage authorities.
