A PLACE IN HISTORY

...and its contemporaries

The human groups that temporarily settled in Lagar Velho over the course of several millennia probably also left remains in other places, in other regions of the present-day Portuguese territory. Nearby or further away, the remains of archaeological occupations have been documented in open-air and cave sites dating from the chronological periods identified at the Lagar Velho rockshelter. These remains are related to the daily life of Upper Palaeolithic human communities, particularly their nourishment and the technical means required to procure it. But that's not all! During the same period, in the Côa Valley, vertical schist panels were engraved with various naturalistic and symbolic motifs that document yet another archaeological reality, which is conventionally referred to as Palaeolithic Rock Art.
