Nowadays we consume domesticated species, born in the supermarket... It wasn't always like this. Actually, the exact opposite has been the case for a large part of human history. Humans survived by foraging for food in the wild, among native wild species. They became familiar with their properties and tentatively selected what was edible in the world of plants and animals. We are quite sure that in the course of this long journey there were some who did not live to tell the tale...
The aurochs (Bos primigenius), now extinct all over the planet, was the origin of today's cattle (Bos taurus), for example. The domestication of this species was advantageous... from a human point of view: it provided food, hides, milk and other derivatives, transport and the strength to farm the land. Its bones are represented at Lagar Velho and in the Côa Valley we have its portrait, engraved by the hand of several generations of Upper Palaeolithic hunters.
