The exhibition Bones of our trade, animals of our history. Lagar Velho told through its animals is on display at the Leiria Museum, Avenida Heróis de Angola, and CIA - Leiria Environmental Interpretation Centre, as part of the programme to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Abrigo do Lagar Velho rockshelter and the Lapedo child discovery.
This exhibition shows the enormous wealth and diversity of animal species that have been identified through archaeological practice at the Lagar Velho rockshelter, an emblematic site of European prehistory. Their bones have reached us!
Through this exceptional array of species, we can find out what our Upper Palaeolithic ancestors ate, the landscapes that surrounded them and even the climatic conditions they experienced. But that's not all! The exhibition reveals a lost world, species that have become extinct and others that have been improved for the exclusive benefit of Human Beings.
Nowadays, many of these species are seriously threatened. It is up to us, as Humankind, to contribute to the conservation of the animal world in order to enrich the biodiversity that once existed, for the benefit of people and the planet.
